It’s this dissolution of the self into the network that’s central to cyberpunk. In Neuromancer, cyberspace is described as ‘a consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators…A graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system’. As we plug into this, our sense of self is lost, and all kinds of wondrous new horizons open up. ‘The internet is a self-atomising machine’, as Oneohtrix Point Never’s digitised voice tells us
